Be Bold & Brave

One of the joys of working with hempcrete in-situ is the ability use oxide pigments to bring colour to the raw wall. While the natural hemp fibre in itself is a lovely warm grey, we wanted to see how much fun we could have by including colours.

We’d heard of this colouring concept but for us it was completeley experimental, so we just went for it and were so impressed with the results. In our first attempt we embraced our daring side being slightly reassured that we could simply render over it if we weren’t satisfied. As it turned out we were so pleased with the patterns and colour concentrations so the wall remains unveiled in all its glory and inspired us to be bold and expressive with our creativity. Once we got our ratios and technques perfected we reached for the stars and began to design an abstract artworks reflecting the local environments like rolling hills, ocean bed, rivers and the ocean.

Mixing the oxide in by hand is a very enjoyable tactile process and time consuming but well worth it for a piece of everlasting artwork that becomes part of the uniqueness of the hempcrete building.
